The endangered Gibraltar Range Waratah with its bright red Inflorescences is endemic to the New England region of NSW.

Waratah comes from the Eora Aboriginal word "Warada" meaning "Beautiful" or "seen from afar" Symbolising connection to the land and close relationships, it also means strength and courage, healing and support. 

In the dreamtime, a female wonga pigeon flew above the tree canopy looking for her lost mate. Caught by a hawk she broke free, tearing her breast. As she flew from flower to flower, the blood from the wounds drenched all the white Waratahs red.
