A New Chapter, A New Light
I never realised the profound impact my move to Australia in 2007 would have on my mental well-being. What started as a fresh chapter of my life turned into a daily awakening, brought on by something so simple yet transformative: the vibrant blue skies.
After years of suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in the grey, often gloomy, and long winters of the UK, I suddenly found myself immersed in a world where the sun seemed to shine brighter, and the skies grew bluer each day.
Nature’s Antidepressant
I quickly discovered that these blue skies weren’t just a beautiful sight, they became my medicine. My natural antidepressant.
Each morning, the warmth of the sun and the brilliance of the sky would kickstart my day. Easy smiles replaced the tired, gloomy starts I was used to. As I stepped outside, I couldn’t help but greet the sunshine with a sense of vitality I hadn’t known in so long.
The simple act of waking up to clear blue skies felt like a gift, pulling me out of bed with a renewed sense of purpose.
Finding Joy in the Everyday
In my previous life, I had been overlooking the joy in simple moments - overshadowed by the grey skies and the weight of SAD. But here, under the expansive blue sky, I opened my eyes to a new way of being.
I started to find happiness in the smallest of things:
the warmth of the sun on my skin
the birds singing in the morning
the edges of nature glowing in the light
the fresh air filling my lungs
These weren’t just fleeting moments. They were filling my cup. They were restoring me.
Feeling More Like Me
For the first time in years, I felt wrapped in positivity and optimism. I felt present, mindful, and, quite frankly, friendlier than I had ever been.
The grumpy version of myself seemed to fade into the background, replaced by someone who felt alive and deeply connected to the world around her.
Clarity, Confidence & Change
The effects of those blue skies didn’t stop there. They inspired me to make better choices in my life. With the clarity and focus I gained from waking up to sunshine, I found myself making healthier decisions, about my well-being, my relationships, and my work.
The fog of negativity that once clouded my thinking was gone.
Instead, I approached each day with clearer thoughts, allowing me to navigate challenges with a fresh perspective.
Difficulties, both big and small, no longer felt so daunting. I felt equipped to face them head-on, strengthened by optimism and lifted by light.
18 Years Later
Fast forward to today - almost 18 years later, and my mental health remains steady. Something I cherish deeply.
I wake up each morning excited to start the day. The sight of the blue skies, the taste of my coffee, and the sound of birds singing all fill me with an overwhelming sense of gratitude.
It’s a feeling I can’t quite put into words. But I experience it deeply, every single day.
